Job Description

Working with the Town of Newmarket's Recreation and Culture Team, means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Aquatics Instructor ($22.28 - $23.63 per hour)

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Deliver, track and evaluate participants in the Swim for Life and Lifesaving programs to Lifesaving Society's "Must See" standards. Hand in all completed documentation at the end of the session.

  • Create lessons that are fun, engaging, and inclusive. Utilize training, lesson plans and formations to ensure lessons are safe and encouraging.

  • Use excellent customer service skills to resolve conflicts or concerns from program participants and the public, or refer to the appropriate staff.

  • Maintain current qualifications, attend regular trainings, update clinics and remain open to feedback about instructional programs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Lifeguard ($20.92 - $22.20 per hour)

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Maintain a safe aquatic environment by scanning, enforcing rules, admission standards, and completing regular facility safety checks to ensure compliance with public health regulations.

  • Welcome patrons, answer questions and educate pool users on how to safely enjoy their swim. Assist patrons with directions and provide equipment as requested.

  • Use excellent customer service skills to resolve conflicts or concerns from program participants and the public, or refer to the appropriate staff

  • Maintain current qualifications, maintain personal fitness level at or above NL standard, attend regular trainings and Lifesaving Society update clinics.

  • Through training, diligent supervision and communication, the candidates will work as a team to identify, prevent, and promptly respond to aquatic emergencies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Job Requirements

All:

  1. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, certifying organizations, emergency service agencies, program participants and staff.

  2. Must be 15 years of age.

  3. Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.

  4. Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Aquatics Instructor:

  1. Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C, NL Swim/Lifesaving Instructor as applicable to position.

  2. High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) certification required.

  3. Good program delivery, interpersonal, organizational and instructional skills.

Lifeguard:

  1. Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C, National Lifeguard certification is required at date of hire.

Please Note: Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.
