The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

Join us for an exciting opportunity at the AESO, where you'll be part of the team playing a crucial role in shaping Alberta's evolving wholesale electricity market. The AESO is mandated to design and operate electricity markets to deliver the safe, reliable, and economic operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) and to facilitate fair, efficient, and openly competitive outcomes.

The Grid Reliability Services department is looking for a full-time Summer Student to join our team for a 4-month term, May to August 2025. In this position, you will gain hands-on experience under the guidance of senior technical specialists. You will provide electrical engineering analysis and technical support for the modelling of the AIES and the development of standards.

Key accountabilities:

  • Support engineers in the development, investigation and analysis of the transmission network data and models including transmission and generation element parameters.

  • Support the development of new and existing analytical tools and simulation testing scripts to ensure the consistency and accuracy of the power system models which are applied for the system reliability studies conducted by the engineers in the AESO.

  • Support the development of model data exchange interfaces with other databases.

  • Support the development of Alberta reliability standards process tools and materials.

You have:

  • Completed a minimum third-year level course work in the Bachelor of Science Program - with a major in Electrical Engineering; graduate students are welcome to apply.

  • An understanding on the basics of the power system is an asset.

  • An understanding of control theory, electric machinery and the application of power electronics is an asset.

  • The ability to set and manage priorities necessary to meet deadlines.

  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a solid customer service focus.

  • Programming experience with Python or Visual Basic. Strong MS Excel and database skills is considered an asset.

  • A positive attitude and can take initiative to offer creative solutions.

  • The ability to handle a wide variety of confidential information in a professional and ethical manner.

  • Availability to work full-time hours from May to August 2025.
